The MIT - Cornell Collision and Why It Happened

Mid-way through the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge, MIT’s autonomous Land Rover LR3 ‘Talos’ and Team Cornell’s autonomous Chevrolet Tahoe ‘Skynet’ collided in a low-speed accident, one of the first well-documented collisions between two full-size autonomous vehicles. This collaborative study between MIT and Cornell examines the root causes of the collision, which are identified in both teams’ syste...

Advancing Robotics: The Urban Challenge Effect

The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency’s (DARPA) Urban Challenge, a contest that pitted robots against each other for 6 h without human intervention, was aimed at advancing the state-of-the-art in research for perception, planning, sensors, and situational awareness with the goal of military application. The event was a success, gaining national media attention for DARPA and robotics; but...

Guided Manipulation Planning at the DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials

We document the empirical results from Carnegie Mellon University’s entry into the DARPA Robotics Challenge. Our system seamlessly and intelligently integrates recent advances in autonomous manipulation with the perspective and intuition of an expert human operator. Virtual fixtures are used as the common language between the operator and the motion planner. The planning system then solves a gu...

Analysis of Human-robot Interaction at the DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials

In December 2013, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Robotics Challenge (DRC) Trials were held in Homestead, Florida. The DRC Trials were designed to test the capabilities of humanoid robots in disaster response scenarios with degraded communications. Each team created their own interaction method to control their robot, either the Boston Dynamics Atlas robot or a robot built...
